Teilzeit return: negotiating hours that still hold after month three
2026-01-18
Many returners accept a Teilzeit percentage that looks reasonable on paper and then discover meeting culture, handover gaps, or informal expectations quietly reclaim full-time attention. The problem is rarely malice; it is incomplete planning.
Before you propose hours, map the team's recurring meetings and the tasks that truly need your presence. Offer a schedule that covers those anchors and names what will be delegated or delayed. Managers respond better to a coverage plan than to a pure percentage request.
Ask for a review date six to eight weeks after return. Put it in writing. That checkpoint lets both sides adjust without framing every change as a conflict. It also protects you if the informal load creeps upward.
Clarify communication expectations for days you are not working. A short agreement about who covers urgent messages prevents the classic pattern where you are technically Teilzeit but still answer evening emails.
If your employer cannot accommodate the hours you need, treat that as information for your next decision — internal role change, different team, or external search — rather than as a personal failure. Hours that only work on the first day of return are not a successful negotiation.
